Summary

While Justice Sleeps is a gripping, complexly plotted thriller set within the halls of the U。S。 Supreme Court。

Avery Keene, a brilliant young law clerk for the legendary Justice Howard Wynn, is doing her best to hold her life together--excelling in an arduous job with the court while also dealing with a troubled family。 When the shocking news breaks that Justice Wynn--the cantankerous swing vote on many current high-profile cases--has slipped into a coma, Avery's life turns upside down。 She is immediately notified that Justice Wynn has left instructions for her to serve as his legal guardian and power of attorney。 Plunged into an explosive role she never anticipated, Avery finds that Justice Wynn had been secretly researching one of the most controversial cases before the court--a proposed merger between an American biotech company and an Indian genetics firm, which promises to unleash breathtaking results in the medical field。 She also discovers that Wynn suspected a dangerously related conspiracy that infiltrates the highest power corridors of Washington。

As political wrangling ensues in Washington to potentially replace the ailing judge whose life and survival Avery controls, she begins to unravel a carefully constructed, chesslike sequence of clues left behind by Wynn。 She comes to see that Wynn had a much more personal stake in the controversial case and realizes his complex puzzle will lead her directly into harm's way in order to find the truth。 While Justice Sleeps is a cunningly crafted, sophisticated novel, layered with myriad twists and a vibrant cast of characters。 Drawing on her astute inside knowledge of the court and political landscape, Stacey Abrams shows herself to be not only a force for good in politics and voter fairness but also a major new talent in suspense fiction。

I love Stacey Abrams and wanted to love this book。 I just found myself not caring that much。 I don’t think the chess analogies worked very well and the trust that the judge shows in Avery is never really explained。

Not quite what I was expecting going in。 I just thought this was going to be a thriller set around the Supreme Court。 There were lots of moving parts and it was interesting。 I really liked Avery and would totally read about her further adventures。

Deborah

I wasn’t always sure who the bad guys were。 She kept me guessing。

Clever and intellectual read with interesting characters and a fast-paced plot。 Kept me interested and even did not want the book to end…。we need more of these characters and more from Stacey Abrams!

Well written, fact based mystery that is very timely。 Examines the tenuous balance on the Supreme Court, the ethics of gene research, the hunger for power。 Also provides insight into loyalty。 Some interesting twists to the plot。

Karen

Thoroughly enjoyed this legal thriller。

With the pace of Dan Brown and legal prowess of John Grisham, Stacey Abrams’ debut novel does not disappoint。 This book was difficult to put down and kept me coming back for more as often as possible。 I highly recommend and imagine this would be great on audio as well。

Suspenseful legal thriller with lots of twists and turns! Abrams does a good job of bringing all of the characters to life in this story of intrigue involving the Supreme Court, the President and the scientific community。

I’m not sure that this was the best book to read on an activity-filled vacation as it was somewhat complicated, particularly when I consider that I know only the basics of chess。 I liked Avery and her friends, though, and if the author chooses to write a sequel, I would be interested in reading it。

Lucy

Not bad, but I believe the success (or otherwise!) of this book will be based on the name of the author。 The content is somewhat 。。。。。。。 dare is say。。。。far fetched?

One of the best political thrillers I have read in a very long time! Highly recommend!

Blown Away! Avery Keene is a clerk for a Supreme Court Justice who is trying to better her life while also dealing with a troubled mother。 One morning she wakes up with a family crisis only to find out she’s now the legal guardian of the comatose Justice Wynn and he’s left a puzzle for her to solve that could directly impact her life and the safety of the nation。 My mother, sister, and I read this together and all three of us were absolutely enthralled from the beginning。 The twists and turns, t Blown Away! While Justice Sleeps is an excellent legal thriller。 There are surprising twists and turns that keep your interest until the last page。 The characters are well developed。 There are heroic and despicable characters who remain true to form throughout。 This is the first time I have read Stacey Abrams and I look forward to reading more of her books。

Good political thriller。 The story starts out slowly。。。a Supreme Court Justice lapses into a coma and chooses his law clerk as his legal guardian and power of attorney。。。chosen instead of his wife or son。As one gets deeper into the story the pace picks up and the final 100 pages will leave the reader breathless and anxious to finish。 Lots of detail。。。sometimes too much。。。that often slows the story down, but a very exciting read。

A really good legal/medical crime thriller - reminded me a bit of The Camel Club series - but the details about the obscure science of biogenetics bogged down the pacing a bit。 I suppose many could say the same of the legal aspects and SCOTUS minutiae, but I always enjoy the “inside baseball” aspect of the law and its various proponents so there’s that。 I thought all of the characters were fascinating, but would’ve liked some more dimension added to their personalities。It appears from the author A really good legal/medical crime thriller - reminded me a bit of The Camel Club series - but the details about the obscure science of biogenetics bogged down the pacing a bit。 I suppose many could say the same of the legal aspects and SCOTUS minutiae, but I always enjoy the “inside baseball” aspect of the law and its various proponents so there’s that。 I thought all of the characters were fascinating, but would’ve liked some more dimension added to their personalities。It appears from the author’s note that this isn’t the last we will see of Avery and her pals, and I anticipate the group getting better and better with time。 Four stars (rounded up out of respect for the political genius that is SA) 。。。more

Great read! Reminded me of John Grishom, especially his early novels。 The characters were compelling and I kept wanting to know what happens next, I sort of hope there'll be a sequel。 Great read! Not my cup of teaAs much as I admire Stacey Abrams, this was a difficult book to finish。 I’m not a fan of thrillers so I erred on the side of giving more stars, but I didn’t really enjoy this book。 It has an extremely dense plot that I did not find that interesting。 So much of the book is exposition after exposition。 There isn’t much action and the characters were fairly bland。 It is an ambitious book and certainly clever, but don’t go into it expecting Grisham style legal suspense。 I think this Not my cup of teaAs much as I admire Stacey Abrams, this was a difficult book to finish。 I’m not a fan of thrillers so I erred on the side of giving more stars, but I didn’t really enjoy this book。 It has an extremely dense plot that I did not find that interesting。 So much of the book is exposition after exposition。 There isn’t much action and the characters were fairly bland。 It is an ambitious book and certainly clever, but don’t go into it expecting Grisham style legal suspense。 I think this might work better as a movie than a book since you could see action rather than reading all the explanations。 。。。more

This is a substantial and solid thriller for a full-time writer, let alone one who is helping to organize a massive political campaign。 Stacey Abrams is my hero!

I liked this book, but not as much as I expected to。 It was a little hard to follow and not quite as breathless as I expected it to be for a thriller。 But I still enjoyed it and will definitely read more from Stacey Abrams!

What does Stacey Abrams not do?! This legal thriller follows Avery, a brilliant black female law clerk to cantankerous Supreme Court Justice Wynn, who slips into a coma right before a crucial vote and leave her with power of attorney and a series of cryptic chess clue。 That sets off a fast-paced mystery involving a corrupt President with creepy military minions, a genetic alternation company, and international intrigue。 While there were parts that I was a little lost by legal or medical jargon, What does Stacey Abrams not do?! I love Stacey Abrams and therefore had to read her first novel published under her name。 While I liked it I wasn't enthralled with it。 It was pretty easy to guess what would happen。 Thrillers are not my usual choice but when I do read them I am constantly on edge waiting to see what happens next。 Unfortunately this wasn't the case with this book。 I love Stacey Abrams and therefore had to read her first novel published under her name。 While I liked it I wasn't enthralled with it。 It was pretty easy to guess what would happen。 Thrillers are not my usual choice but when I do read them I am constantly on edge waiting to see what happens next。 Unfortunately this wasn't the case with this book。 。。。more

A very enjoyable read, but。。。 religious affiliation is not genetically determined。。。 and no one can crawl through a ceiling crawl space without making a lot of noise!

This is the kind of far-fetched supreme court/president/congress in trouble at the highest levels crime story I find I am not much interested in。 It combines a crime that involves drug developments, company mergers, foreign genocide, and murder of everyone who gets in the way with a very far-fetched puzzle format in which a supreme court judge has been put in a coma, but before he did he not only transferred power of attorney to his young female law clerk (with whom he was NOT in a relationship) This is the kind of far-fetched supreme court/president/congress in trouble at the highest levels crime story I find I am not much interested in。 It combines a crime that involves drug developments, company mergers, foreign genocide, and murder of everyone who gets in the way with a very far-fetched puzzle format in which a supreme court judge has been put in a coma, but before he did he not only transferred power of attorney to his young female law clerk (with whom he was NOT in a relationship) and left a range of obscure clues for her about what was going on which to solve she needed to know chess, recall past conversations, link up with a family member to uncover a childhood location etc etc。 In real life everyone would have been murdered or the case decided well before these puzzles for crossword afficiandos would have even begun。 In addition, the characters have an array of unusual qualities that all are needed for the solving to work – one has an eidetic memory; another has a background in gene technology; another is a very high-level ex-military and IT and security expert, etc etc。 It was all too convenient and written backwards from what the plot needed rather than as a narrative where you were interested in the characters。 And the central character, the law clerk Avery, was like a bunch of too good to be true cliches (outstandingly honest, resilient and determined, charitable, looking after an alcoholic mother, protected by a superior who sees her hidden talents) from this kind of genre。 。。。more

Trite But ReadableAuthor is trying too hard with vocabulary; the story is strained, the characters predictable。 I will not read a sequel。
